Postdoctoral Scholar – Research Coordinator 

The Student Success Evaluation and Research Center (SSERC) (https://sserc.ucsc.edu) in the Division of Student Success at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the SSERC Postdoctoral Scholar under the direction of the SSERC Faculty Director and in close collaboration with the SSERC Managing Director. The SSERC Postdoctoral Scholar will work with the center’s faculty director and affiliates, as well as doctoral and undergraduate students on a diverse research agenda. SSERC has a number of participatory research and program evaluation projects with campus partners (primarily academic support services) underway in various stages throughout the year, and the Postdoctoral Scholar will have the opportunity, through participation in these projects, to receive advanced research and evaluation training and academic preparation in the field of Higher Education under the direction and mentorship of the SSERC Faculty Director and with assistance from graduate and undergraduate students. This includes opportunities to lead projects, mentor undergraduate students, develop an independent research agenda, and engage with a community of researchers in the field.

The ideal candidate will be a higher education scholar with a research focus on educational equity and/or student success. Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:

 Expertise in mixed methods research

 Experience with program evaluation

 Experience with teaching, creating and assessing learning objectives (rubrics), and/or curriculum development (for the undergraduate research lab)

 Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse campus constituents (faculty, students, researchers, administrators)

 Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues

 Experience in team building, communication, and interpersonal skills

Committed to educational equity and closing achievement gaps, the SSERC supports and engages in equity-oriented collaborative research and participatory evaluation with faculty, students, and staff to generate actionable findings that promote student success. As part of the Division of Student Success, the SSERC aims to lead the campus in fostering a culture of rigorous, research-based analysis connected to improving practice to ensure effective student success efforts and outcomes.

The SSERC is in its first few years of operations, and the Postdoctoral Scholar has the unique opportunity to shape the development of its undergraduate research lab. Furthermore, the Postdoctoral Scholar will be supported by the SSERC to carry out their own research agenda. The SSERC provides a rich context for engaging in higher education research that includes access to data, ongoing projects from which individual projects can emanate, a community of scholars, mentorship, and travel funds.

SALARY 

Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum annual salary rates are made based on the individual’s Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in Higher Education, Education, or a Social Science discipline with a focus on higher education student success and/or equity APO revised template 3/2018

POSITION AVAILABLE

As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. The preferred start date is September 1, 2018. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

MAXIMUM DURATION OF SERVICE IN A POSTDOCTORAL TITLE

Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time; the initial appointment is for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Reappointment will be contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. The total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution. Under limited circumstances, an exception to this limit may be considered, not to exceed a sixth year.
