Civil Society and Community Studies Faculty Position in Native Scholarship

The School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking to fill one faculty position in Human Ecology as part of a campus-wide cluster hiring initiative to add to the vibrant community of academic researchers at UW-Madison focused on research at the nexus of environment, health, and community in the Native American context. Participating units in this 3 faculty cluster hire include the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies, the School of Nursing, and the School of Human Ecology. We seek an action-oriented scholar whose research focuses on Native American youth, their families, and communities. The area of research is open but should emphasize the strengths of Indigenous groups and may include indigenous knowledge systems; traditional ecological knowledge; community/tribal education, health, psychosocial health and wellbeing, housing, and food sovereignty; environmental justice and community sustainability, mass incarceration, etc. While the specific area of research for this position is flexible, the candidate's research should focus on Indigenous peoples with a particular focus on Wisconsin communities (both urban and sovereign nations).


Other desirable attributes include fluency in mixed-methods and community-engaged scholarship. The position requires scholarship, teaching, and service in a department and a program serving undergraduate and graduate students. Successful candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with an interdisciplinary and collaborative intellectual community. Native American and minority candidates are encouraged to apply.


Degree and area of specialization:

Holds a doctoral degree at the time of appointment in a discipline relevant to the unit and position e.g. psychology, human development and family studies, community/environmental planning, public health, social work, American Indian studies, anthropology, education or related disciplines. Graduate students having obtained ABD status are encouraged to apply but employment is contingent upon completion of degree by July 1, 2019.


Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

  • Years of experience will be commensurate with the rank sought. All candidates must have proven success in conducting research and teaching appropriate to their stage of career.
  • Associate Professor candidates must possess experience and scholarly credentials for appointment with tenure at UW-Madison.
  • Ability to lead a research program that engages students and produces high-impact scholarship.
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive work environment.


Principal duties:

The successful candidate will:

  • Help to build community-academic partnerships with tribal/urban Indian communities in Wisconsin.
  • Maintain a coherent and productive program of research excellence.
  • Seek and secure funding to support research partnerships.
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses (2:2 load) and contribute to program development.
  • Supervise student research and provide high quality academic mentoring.
  • Participate and contribute to the Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies.
  • Participate in shared governance and other departmental and university service activities as appropriate for career stage.
  • Promote respect and the practice of civility and inclusiveness in the workplace.
