The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB), School of Pharmacy is currently seeking a Director of Qualitative Research (Director, Research Project) for the PATIENTS program of the Pharmaceutical Health Services Research (PHSR) Department. The selected candidate will be responsible for supporting the overall strategic direction research and training initiatives of the PATIENTS program. The Director of Qualitative Research will oversee major research initiatives that include the development related to ethical and human subjects protections (HSP) issues; provide guidance on the study design to be more inclusive of patient and stakeholder engagement, qualitative and mixed-methods research activities; support patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) and community-engaged research (CEnR) studies on the University of Maryland, Baltimore  (UMB) campus in collaboration with the UMB Institute for Clinical and Translational Research (ICTR); implementation science; PCOR-related initiatives for reducing health disparities; and dissemination of findings to patients and other stakeholders and the communities we serve.

  • Uses subject matter expertise to plan and coordinate the content and delivery of qualitative research studies.
  • Provides strategic direction for the research studies, to include establishing goals, target groups, and desired outcomes.
  • Ensure that goals and objectives specified for the research project are accomplished in accordance with priorities, time and funding limitations, or other specifications.
  • Evaluate project effectiveness to develop and implement new or improved methods. Devise and implement evaluation methodologies.
  • Prepares, coordinates, and maintains research study and delivery methods for the daily operations and events within that research study. Plan, develop, administer, and coordinate new or revised project goals, objectives, workflows, interview guides, analytic approaches, and policies through the duration of the research study. Implement approved study policies and procedures.
  • Organizes and/or participate in various committees and teams to consult with program heads, community partners, and administrative officials on policy and project needs as well as various administrative issues.
  • Assists Principal Investigators and regulatory staff in the preparation of new protocol submissions, protocol amendments, and renewals of ongoing research studies or clinical trials.
  • Direct personnel to ensure research project activities are accomplished.
  • Ensure compliance with protocols and all relevant local, federal, and state regulatory and institutional policies.
  • Manage research project budget, expenditure adherence, grant applications, and maintenance of inventory on equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinates the regular publication of summary reports and serves as an information resource to coworkers, the university, and external figures.
  • Develops funding sources for the program, through grant seeking, major fundraising events and/or donations.
  • Provide training and guidance to less experienced personnel.
  • Attend research study or clinical trial related meetings, conferences, and teleconferences, as well as participating in any additional planning and development related activities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Education: Bachelor’s degree in public health, psychology, sociology, nursing, chemistry, biology or another scientific discipline appropriate to position required. Master’s degree preferred.

Experience: Five (5) years of experience involving program planning and coordination experience in a related field with at least two (2) years in research specialization.

Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of experience with overall responsibility for program direction, coordination and implementation.

Other: No substitution of experience for minimum education requirement.
