Postdoctoral Scholar Opening

The Center for Health Equity Research (CHER) at Northern Arizona University seeks a highly motivated postdoctoral scholar to be part of a dynamic applied health equity research team. We are most interested in candidates with a Public Health background in one of the following areas: epidemiology, health economics, or health services research. This position has identified funding for two years. 

CHER’s research is focused primarily on historically underserved populations to address health disparities. CHER—and NAU—are uniquely positioned to engage in meaningful research on the social determinants of health. NAU’s beautiful mountain campus, located in close proximity to many American Indian and other minority and rural communities, has strong long-standing relationships with these communities. CHER collaborates across numerous departments and programs at NAU, and has developed strong formal and informal relationships with key health providers in the region.

The successful candidate will participate in mixed methods research and with a strong research team. The postdoc will be expected to collect and code data, and analyze quantitative data using such programs as SPSS and/or SAS. This person will work with CHER’s director, our team, and our collaborating researchers to accomplish a range of tasks, such as the following:

  • Planning and designing research studies focused on health equity research.
  • Write and edit major sections of grant proposals submitted by the research group.
  • Participate in data collection, data processing, and analysis of data.
  • Participate in the preparation of grant reports and author technical publications and reports.
  • Present project results to internal and external parties.
  • Produce peer-reviewed publications, white papers, and conference abstracts and presentations.


  • Public health background in one of the following areas: epidemiology, health economics, or health services research
  • Expertise in quantitative data collection and analysis.
  • Evidence of strong publication record.
  • Experience conducting strategic planning and evaluation of community-based research.
  • Familiarity with grant-writing process.
  • Experience conducting field research in historically underserved communities.
