The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to improve public safety and reduce the use of jail and prison.  Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research on topics of justice reform and provides consulting services to criminal justice innovators.

The Center’s Research and Data Implementation Team is seeking a Research Associate to perform data tracking, reporting, and analysis for alternative to detention and incarceration programs in and around New York City. This position offers an entry-level opportunity to conduct on-the-ground research on several innovative court projects and, more generally, to learn about how reforms are implemented in the justice system. The successful candidate must bring a real interest in this work and have a strong preexisting skillset in using SPSS or SAS software, along with a basic knowledge of quantitative research methodology. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Downloading, coding, cleaning, and analyzing data from large databases;
  • Producing statistical reports (e.g., regarding program volume, service linkages, or compliance rates);
  • Conducting special research projects to be designed in collaboration with senior research and program staff.   

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Master’s Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree plus some relevant research experience, preferably as a criminal justice researcher. Candidate must be a skilled communicator (written and oral) and able to interact effectively with members of the judiciary, court staff, community-based organizations, criminal justice personnel, and members of the public. Experience with SPSS or SAS is required (SPSS skills strongly preferred). Experience using basic quantitative methods required. Knowledge and/or strong interest in the justice system is a must.
