Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Dr. Rich Milner, Professor of Education and Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair of Education at Vanderbilt
University is the founding director for the Initiative for Race Research and Justice (RRJ). Along with co-
directors Dr. Graham Reside, Executive Director of the Cal Turner Program for Moral Leadership in the
Professions and associate professor of ethics at Vanderbilt Divinity School, and Dr. Wonder Drake,
Professor of Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology, the RRJ is seeking to fill the position of
Postdoctoral Fellow to undertake both administrative and research support in advancing the initiative,
research, and related projects.
About the Race, Research and Justice initiative
Founded in 2018, RRJ is a growing initiative housed within the Department of Teaching and Learning.
The goal of RRJ is to centralize and bring together research and researchers focused on race inside and
outside the field of education. RRJ has an overt emphasis on studying and impacting practices and
policies toward racial justice. RRJ’s work is organized around three main focal areas: (1) conducting high
quality research on race; (2) using new and expanded knowledge to improve practices, policies, society
and the overall human condition; and (3) sharing and disseminating knowledge, resources and tools in
collaboration with communities, organizations and institutions for racial justice.

About the post-doctoral fellowship position
Drs. Milner, Reside and Drake are looking for an associate who can work approximately 40 hours per
week assisting with developing data collection/analyses, building community connections, grant writing,
and day-to-day operations within the initiative. The associate will be responsible for several tasks,
including but not limited to:
● Assistance in the procurement of funding from both external and internal sources;
● Leading and participating in regular meetings with the initiative’s research and development
team and directors;
● Leading and collaborating on research studies aimed at understanding connections between
race, health, education, justice and incarceration;
● Delegating and collaborating on tasks with graduate students and other team members;
● Developing partnerships with school-based administrative teams and other community partners
to build trusting, sustainable relationships;
● Writing research and related reports;
● Planning, advertising, marketing, and supporting the development of events, professional
learning sessions, and other related activities.
This position will have room to grow as part of the initiative’s research team (i.e., taking on increasing
responsibilities and enjoying additional professional opportunities). This job would be a good entry-level
position for someone who may be interested in a future career as a project/program manager in higher
education or university teaching and learning faculty.
Term: One 12-month year (possibility of one-year renewal)
The salary will be between $53,000 – $60,000 with benefits and contingent upon experience. Fellow will
be provided an office at Vanderbilt Divinity School. Fellows are required to relocate to Nashville, TN.
The position will start August 15, 2022.
The ideal research associate will have the following:
● A terminal doctoral degree in a relevant field (education, sociology, criminology, ethics, or other
related field), with research background and attention to issues of racial and social inequality
● Have completed a PhD within the last five years.
● Strong interest/expertise in quantitative and qualitative research skills.
● Organizational skills and attention to detail;
● Communication and writing acumen;
● Interest and experience in in issues of equity and racial justice.
● Enjoys and has interest in interdisciplinary, interprofessional, cross-sector work
Early career scholars from all disciplines are welcome to apply; ideally the candidate would have a
background in education, social science, or social justice.
