Professional Bio

I am a Professor of Psychology in the University of South Carolina’s Clinical-Community Psychology doctoral program. Along with students and community partners, my work has focused on social inclusion and housing issues for persons with psychiatric disabilities and promoting mutual help approaches to mental health. I also work on issues of housing and homelessness, particularly community responses to those who are unhoused. With graduate and undergraduate students, we actively collaborate with local stakeholders to help Columbia address challenges related to housing and homelessness. Our efforts have included community organizing, program development, evaluation, and research. Some of this work has been funded by NIMH, HUD, NIDRR, state agencies, and foundations.

CP and Me

I was looking for a field that would allow me to act on my values and offer new ways to overcome limitations of our “helping” systems. I was fortunate to get accepted into a clinical-community psychology graduate program. It has changed how I see the world and how we can work to change the world. Community psychology has become my professional network and continues to be a source of challenge to do better. I have served on a number of SCRA committees, SCRA leadership, editorial boards, and I am a co-author of Community Psychology: Linking Individuals and Communities, 4th Edition, published by APA Books in 2021.
